September 22, 2020

So you want to be a business owner

Where does one begin?

Congratulations! How exciting! You've decided to become a business owner. This is great news. It take a special person to take the chance to build a business of their own. There are some considerations that one must self reflect on as you begin this new journey. Lets review what these are.

First, Why do you want to be a business owner? This is a question that is self reflective and by answering honestly, it will determine ones success or failure. Is it for self worth? for status? financial stability? What about a lifestyle change? Freedom? All these aspects, among others, lay the foundation to ones success. When strained situations arise , which they routinely will, one will often reflect on why they initially opened their business, in order to find the determination and persevere through each challenging situation as it arises. Always keeping that vision in the forefront is imperative to maintain business success.

Secondly, What are your temperament and interpersonal communication skills like? The reality is that many desire to become self employed with their own businesses but it takes certain qualities to succeed. How do you handle stress? What is your temperament like? Dealing with customers, staff, vendors, contracted companies etc (the list goes on) can be stressful, pressure and overwhelming. By having good interpersonal skills and effective communication skills, One will move through challenges that arise in a smooth fashion.

Thirdly, How organized are you? Do you have good time management skills? Can you stay on task from beginning to end or do you stray? One needs to have systems in place and the personality to maintain those systems in order to stay on task. By doing so, goals will be achieved.

And last, what traits do you think a business owner needs to have? Do you have those traits? a business owner needs to have characteristics of determination and being self driven. They also have to have a passion for the type of business and/or service you offer to your client. Without this passion and drive, many times a business owner may become bored, disconnected and no longer care. As a result, the initial business vision and identified goals become lost and the business eventually fails.

It may be beneficial to interview some successful business owners to gain understanding of whats involved.

So now that you've self reflected, make your decision. Your final answer? YES!! I am ready to do this. Excellent!! Time for the next step which is the planning and designing phase of your business vision.
